ICT Europe Raises Awareness for Missing Panchen Lama with Large Banner

Amsterdam, 17 May 2026 – Today marks 31 years since the disappearance of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama. To draw attention to his case and ensure he is not forgotten, the windows of the International Campaign for Tibet Europe office in Amsterdam have been covered with a large banner calling attention to his disappearance.

The ICT Europe office is located alongside one of the main railway routes leading into Amsterdam Central Station. Every day, thousands of commuters and travelers pass by the building. With this prominent display, ICT hopes to spark curiosity, start conversations and remind that the Panchen Lama’s case remains unresolved after more than three decades.

At the age of six, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was recognized by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen Lama, one of the highest spiritual figures in Tibetan Buddhism. Just three days later, on 17 May 1995, he and his family disappeared after being taken by Chinese authorities. He has not been seen in public since.

Now 37 years old, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima is widely considered the world’s longest-held political prisoner and one of the most prominent cases of enforced disappearance. For Tibetans, his disappearance is about more than one missing child. The Panchen Lama holds a crucial role in Tibetan Buddhism and his case has become a symbol of broader efforts to interfere in Tibetan religious freedom and identity.

Tibetans and supporters around the world have continue to call for proof of his wellbeing and for his immediate release. Through actions like this public display in Amsterdam, ICT continues to ensure that his story remains visible and that pressure for answers does not fade.
