Defending Tibet’s environment at the United Nations
Bringing Tibet’s climate crisis to the world’s highest stage.
For many years, ICT has actively engaged with the United Nations, ensuring that Tibet remains on the international agenda. But Tibet is not only a human rights crisis, it is an environmental one with global consequences. Known as the “Third Pole” because of its vast reserves of glaciers and freshwater, Tibet plays a vital role in the planet’s climate system. Yet large-scale dam projects, mining, and displacement are threatening both Tibet’s fragile ecosystems and the lives of Tibetan communities.
We made Tibet’s environment central to our UN advocacy by:
- Participating in UN Climate Meetings, highlighting Tibet’s role in Asia’s water security and global climate stability.
- Presenting our Dam Report to show the human and environmental costs of China’s hydropower expansion on the Tibetan Plateau.
- Supporting environmental defenders from Tibet, whose voices are too often silenced, to ensure they are heard in the international arena.
Through this work, ICT bridges the gap between local Tibetan realities and global climate policymaking, making sure the world recognises that defending Tibet’s environment is also defending our shared future.
