The European Union and Tibet

Keeping Tibet on the EU Agenda

Europeans have long stood with the Tibetan people in their peaceful struggle for freedom and human dignity. Together with our partners, we work to keep Tibet at the heart of the European Union’s agenda.

The European Union and its institutions have made Tibet a recurring concern in their engagement with China. The European Parliament, in particular, has led the way — adopting over fifty resolutions on or mentioning Tibet since the 1980s, defending human rights, religious freedom, and the Tibetan people’s right to preserve their identity.

The International Campaign for Tibet, through our office in Brussels, works closely with EU officials, diplomats, and parliamentarians in Brussels and Strasbourg to make sure Tibet’s voice is heard — and that Europe’s enduring solidarity with the Tibetan people translates into meaningful action

How we work at the European Union

  • Engaging with EU institutions: We maintain regular contact with officials and diplomats from the European External Action Service, the EU Delegation in Beijing and relevant European Commission departments, to advocate for stronger and more consistent EU action on Tibet.
  • Supporting parliamentary action: ICT provides expertise and analysis to Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and propose actions – resolutions, hearings, statements, parliamentary questions… – that keep attention on Tibet and the situation of the Tibetan people.
  • Building alliances: ICT collaborates with European NGOs, think tanks, and human rights networks to amplify Tibet’s visibility and foster coordinated advocacy across Europe.
