His Holiness the Dalai Lama successfully underwent surgery on his left knee on Monday at the Apollo Hospital in New Delhi, according to his personal physician, Dr. Tsetan Dorjee Sadutshang.
The Tibetan leader, who turns 91 on July 6, left Dharamshala on June 5 for New Delhi for medical treatment on his left knee. The office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama had announced the planned treatment last week and stated that he would travel to Ladakh in late June.
The surgery follows a successful knee replacement operation on his right knee, which was performed in June 2025 at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York, one of the world’s leading orthopedic centers. After that procedure, His Holiness recovered in Syracuse, New York, where he underwent intensive physical therapy before returning to Dharamshala.
Despite persistent mobility issues resulting from knee problems in recent years, the Tibetan spiritual leader has maintained an active public agenda. He continued to give religious lessons, attend public gatherings, and fulfill official obligations, occasionally using assistants and a golf cart to travel longer distances between his residence and the Tsuglagkhang, the main Tibetan temple in exile, during major public events.
Following his recovery from the latest operation, His Holiness is expected to travel to Ladakh later this month for his annual summer stay. His 91st birthday, scheduled for July 6, is expected to fall during his stay in Ladakh.
