At the age of six, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima
was recognised by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as
the 11th Panchen Lama, one of the highest spiritual
leaders in Tibetan Buddhism.
Three days later, on 17 May 1995, he and
his family disappeared after being taken away
by the Chinese authorities.
He has not been seen in public since.
