{"id":12990,"date":"2023-12-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-12-13T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/nieuws\/european-parliament-urges-china-to-abolish-coercive-boarding-schools-in-tibet\/"},"modified":"2023-12-14T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-12-13T23:00:00","slug":"european-parliament-urges-china-to-abolish-coercive-boarding-schools-in-tibet","status":"publish","type":"nieuws","link":"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/en\/news\/european-parliament-urges-china-to-abolish-coercive-boarding-schools-in-tibet\/","title":{"rendered":"European Parliament urges China to abolish coercive boarding schools in Tibet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a resolution adopted at its plenary session in Strasbourg today, the European Parliament has urged China to immediately abolish the coercive boarding school system that has isolated over 1 million Tibetan children from their families, language and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resolution, adopted with 477 voices in favor and 14 against, strongly condemns \u201cthe repressive assimilation policies throughout China, especially the boarding school system in Tibet\u201d and calls on China to immediately abolish this sytem. It also urges EU Member States to adopt visa restrictions for Chinese officials tied to the boarding school system, <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/ict-welcomes-us-visa-restrictions-over-tibet-boarding-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">similar to what the US has done<\/a>. Members of the European Parliament also reiterate their call for the resumption of the <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.org\/why-tibet\/negotiations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sino-Tibetan dialogue<\/a>, stalled since 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe International Campaign for Tibet welcomes the strong stance taken by the European Parliament regarding the coercive boarding schools system in Tibet, which not only represents grave violations of the rights of Tibetan children and their families, but also threatens the very survival of the Tibetan cultural identity,\u201d<\/em> ICT\u2019s EU Policy Director Vincent Metten said. <em>\u201cThe European Union must now follow up with firm and concrete action to press China to reverse course on this issue, including for example by adopting sanctions against the Chinese officials responsible for the design and implemention of these harmful policies.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his speech during the debate on the resolution, European Commissioner Janez Lenar\u010di\u010d recognized that there were \u201cwell-substantiated reports,\u201d including by UN independent experts, about \u201cTibetan pupils being forced to attend state-run boarding schools, far from their families and with rare opportunities to visit their homes\u201d and recalled that the EU had reiterated its \u201cdeep concern\u201d about the situation in Tibet during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2023\/12\/07\/remarks-by-president-charles-michel-at-the-press-conference-following-the-eu-china-summit-in-beijing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EU-China Summit<\/a> that took place on 7 December in Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Report on EU-China relations<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a new report on EU-China relations initiated by Member of the European Parliament Hilde Vautmans (Belgium, Renew Europe Group) and adopted a day earlier, the European Parliament had already strongly condemned the Chinese government\u2019s assimilationist policies in Tibet and called on China to \u201cimmediately terminate\u201d the boarding schools system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of the European Parliament also expressed their concerns regarding the continuous restrictions on religious freedom in China, including via new legislation on Administrative Measures for Religious Activity Venues <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.org\/new-religious-affairs-order-requires-adherence-to-ccp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">that will strengthen the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s control over religions, including Tibetan Buddhism<\/a>. They also advocated for a United Nations investigation mission to Tibet and urged Chinese authorities to provide information about the arrest of nine Tibetan environmental defenders who protested against illegal mining activities.
