{"id":12874,"date":"2023-03-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-08T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/nieuws\/least-free-country-tibet-at-bottom-of-global-rankings\/"},"modified":"2023-03-09T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-03-08T23:00:00","slug":"least-free-country-tibet-at-bottom-of-global-rankings","status":"publish","type":"nieuws","link":"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/en\/news\/least-free-country-tibet-at-bottom-of-global-rankings\/","title":{"rendered":"Least-free country: Tibet at bottom of global rankings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tibet is the least-free country on Earth, sharing the bottom spot with South Sudan and Syria in watchdog group Freedom House\u2019s new global rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAfter more than six decades of illegal occupation, China has turned Tibet into the world\u2019s least-free country alongside South Sudan and Syria,\u201d<\/em> the International Campaign for Tibet said. <em>\u201cWith Tibet once again at the bottom of Freedom House\u2019s global freedom scores, it\u2019s imperative that the global community take action to resolve the decades-long conflict in Tibet. A key first step is for the US Congress to pass the bipartisan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savetibet.org\/occupation\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Promoting a Resolution to the Tibet-China Conflict Act<\/a>, which will pressure China\u2019s government to resume peaceful negotiations with the Dalai Lama\u2019s envoys.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Freedom House\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/report\/freedom-world\/2023\/marking-50-years\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Freedom in the World 2023 report<\/a>, released today, March 9, 2023, Tibet has a <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/countries\/freedom-world\/scores?sort=desc&amp;order=Total%20Score%20and%20Status\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">global freedom score of 1 out of a possible 100<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the third straight year that Tibet has been at the bottom of the rankings, following <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.org\/tibet-least-free-country-alongside-south-sudan-syria-in-new-ranking\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2022<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.org\/freedom-house-tibet-ties-syria-as-worlds-least-free\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Global freedom score<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/savetibet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20231009-freedom-house-1200-700x368.jpg\" alt=\"Freedom House\" class=\"wp-image-2466181\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Freedom House\u2019s global freedom scores comprise individual scores for both political rights and civil liberties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As in prior years, Tibet scored minus 2 out of a possible 40 for political rights and 3 out of a possible 60 for civil liberties, giving it an overall score of 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Sudan and Syria have that same overall score, with each scoring minus 3 for political rights and 4 for civil liberties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its narrative report on Tibet, Freedom House says both ethnic Chinese and Tibetans lack basic rights in Tibet, \u201cbut the authorities are especially rigorous in suppressing any signs of dissent among Tibetans, including manifestations of Tibetan religious beliefs and cultural identity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Freedom House says key developments in Tibet in 2022 included China <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.org\/covid-in-tibet\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">using an outbreak of COVID-19 to increase repression against Tibetans<\/a>, sending thousands of people to overcrowded and unsanitary facilities where the authorities refused to segregate the healthy from the sick. The situation was so bad that <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/inhumane-covid-restrictions-lead-to-despair-and-suicides-in-tibet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at least five Tibetans committed suicide<\/a> by jumping off mass quarantine sites or locked-down residential buildings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another key development, according to Freedom House, was a report from Citizen Lab that China may have <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/reported-mass-dna-collection-aims-to-undermine-tibetan-identity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gathered DNA samples over six years from as much as one-third of the total population of the Tibet Autonomous Region<\/a>, which spans most of western Tibet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/country\/tibet\/freedom-world\/2023\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read Freedom House\u2019s narrative report on Tibet.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">March 10 anniversary<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Freedom House\u2019s report comes just one day before the 64th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising of 10 March 1959, when the Tibetan people rose up as one against China\u2019s occupation of their homeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Chinese troops eventually crushed their uprising, the Tibetans succeeded in helping their leader, the Dalai Lama, escape into exile, keeping the Tibetan cause alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the more than six decades since, China has brutally repressed the Tibetan people, committing innumerable human rights violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Central Tibetan Administration, which provides democratic governance for Tibetans in exile, more than 1 million Tibetans have died as a direct result of China\u2019s invasion and occupation of their land.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tibet is the least-free country on Earth, sharing the bottom spot with South Sudan and Syria in watchdog group Freedom House\u2019s new global rankings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":12875,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false},"categorie":[691],"news_tag":[673],"class_list":["post-12874","nieuws","type-nieuws","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","categorie-news","news_tag-repression"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
