{"id":12810,"date":"2022-09-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-12T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/nieuws\/reported-mass-dna-collection-aims-to-undermine-tibetan-identity\/"},"modified":"2022-09-13T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-09-12T22:00:00","slug":"reported-mass-dna-collection-aims-to-undermine-tibetan-identity","status":"publish","type":"nieuws","link":"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/en\/news\/reported-mass-dna-collection-aims-to-undermine-tibetan-identity\/","title":{"rendered":"Reported mass DNA collection aims to undermine Tibetan identity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two recent reports document a systematic DNA collection program involving Tibetans, the political objective of which can only be the undermining of Tibetan identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a report published today, 13 September, Citizen Lab finds that China\u2019s police may have gathered between about 920,000 to 1.2 million DNA samples in the Tibet Autonomous Region over the past six years. Those figures represent one-quarter to one-third of the total population of the TAR, which spans most of western Tibet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human Rights Watch also released a report last week saying that Chinese authorities are systematically collecting DNA from residents of the TAR, including by taking blood from children as young as 5 without their parents\u2019 consent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cChina\u2019s mass DNA collection of Tibetans is outrageous, but it is not entirely surprising,\u201d<\/em> said ICT, an advocacy group that promotes human rights and democratic freedoms for the Tibetan people. <em>\u201cSince China began its illegal occupation of Tibet over 60 years ago, it has used Tibet as a laboratory for its coercive methods of social control, including constant mass surveillance, the stationing of Communist Party cadres inside Buddhist monasteries and efforts to force Tibetans to spy on their own neighbors.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cSuch an intrusive system is part of the Chinese government\u2019s approach in which it recognizes no limits to its authority, imposes a climate of fear and seeks to regulate every aspect of public and private life. The end goal is not simply to bring Tibetans to heel but to undermine their unique identity altogether so that their right to determine their own destiny will no longer matter.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DNA collection<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its report, Citizen Lab says the DNA collection program is unrelated to criminal justice. \u201c[O]ur analysis indicates that for years police across Tibet have collected DNA samples from men, women, and children, none of whom appear to be criminal suspects,\u201d Citizen Lab says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police are also not targeting specific groups like activists or government critics. Instead, they are collecting DNA from entire communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, Human Rights Watch says in its report that, \u201cThere is no publicly available evidence suggesting people can decline to participate\u201d in the DNA collection, \u201cor that police have credible evidence of criminal conduct that might warrant such collection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of Human Rights Watch\u2019s most disturbing findings involve blood collection from children. That includes the taking of blood from kindergarten students in Tibet\u2019s capital of Lhasa, and the collection of DNA from all boys ages 5 and older in a Tibetan township of Qinghai province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Historical context<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Citizen Lab, the mass police-led DNA collection program in the TAR began in June 2016 during the final months of Chen Quanguo\u2019s tenure as Chinese Communist Party Secretary of the TAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/the-origin-of-the-xinjiang-model-in-tibet-under-chen-quanguo-securitizing-ethnicity-and-accelerating-assimilation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">building a system of constant mass surveillance, torture and militarization in the TAR<\/a>, Chen moved on to the same role in Xinjiang (which Uyghurs know as East Turkestan). There he led China\u2019s genocide of the Uyghurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chen\u2019s brutality toward Uyghurs shows how China\u2019s oppression of Tibetans spreads to other groups\u2014not just inside the People\u2019s Republic of China but increasingly outside as well as Beijing exports its surveillance technology to foreign countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, continuing DNA collection in the TAR shows that oppression there has not subsided since Chen\u2019s departure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/citizenlab.ca\/2022\/09\/mass-dna-collection-in-the-tibet-autonomous-region\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read Citizen Lab\u2019s report.<\/a><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2022\/09\/05\/china-new-evidence-mass-dna-collection-tibet\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read Human Rights Watch\u2019s report.<\/a><\/h5>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two recent reports document a systematic DNA collection program involving Tibetans, the political objective of which can only be the undermining of Tibetan identity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":12811,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false},"categorie":[45,691],"news_tag":[673],"class_list":["post-12810","nieuws","type-nieuws","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","categorie-inside-tibet","categorie-news","news_tag-repression"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
