{"id":12778,"date":"2022-05-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-27T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/nieuws\/un-human-rights-chiefs-visit-is-chinas-political-victory\/"},"modified":"2022-05-28T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T22:00:00","slug":"un-human-rights-chiefs-visit-is-chinas-political-victory","status":"publish","type":"nieuws","link":"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/en\/news\/un-human-rights-chiefs-visit-is-chinas-political-victory\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Human Rights chief\u2019s visit is China\u2019s political victory"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The International Campaign for Tibet is deeply disappointed at the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet\u2019s visit to China as she gave a political victory to the Communist regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a six-day visit, the high commissioner today addressed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/statements\/2022\/05\/statement-un-high-commissioner-human-rights-michelle-bachelet-after-official\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">virtual press conference<\/a> at which she adopted the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s framing of policies, domestically and internationally. Chinese state media reported on the press conference saying, \u201cThe Saturday statement dismissed the rampant disinformation on the Xinjiang region and was also a slap to the US and some Western countries, their media and anti-China forces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bachelet <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/ict-calls-on-un-high-commissioner-raise-tibet-loud-and-clear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">did not visit Tibet<\/a> and referred only marginally to the situation in the region, which is regularly ranked as one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/tibet-least-free-country-alongside-south-sudan-syria-in-new-ranking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">least-free in the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe high commissioner\u2019s failure to report truthfully and without fear on the human rights situation in China is a gross dereliction of her duty,\u201d<\/em> ICT said. <em>\u201cBachelet has handed the Chinese government a political victory. In failing to acknowledge the evidence showing China\u2019s systematic human rights violations aimed at the destruction of the cultural identity and the very lives of Uyghurs and Tibetans, Mongols, and many others, the high commissioner has emboldened China and further disempowered civil society actors.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cBachelet\u2019s only two sentences on the situation in Tibet are utterly unacceptable and severely erode human rights standards and institutions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At her press conference, Bachelet said: \u201cOn the Tibet Autonomous Region, it is important that linguistic, religious and cultural identity of Tibetans be protected and the Tibetan people are allowed to participate fully and freely in decisions about their religious life \u2026 I discussed education policies in the Tibet Autonomous Region and stressed the importance of children learning in their own language and culture.\u201d It is important to note that the Tibet Autonomous Region only spans about half of Tibet, with eastern and northeastern Tibetan areas incorporated into Sichuan, Qinghai, Gansu and Yunnan provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the press conference, Bachelet spoke about the attacks on the Uyghur people in the context of \u201cde-radicalization measures\u201d and portrayed China as a proponent of multilateralism even though it grossly breaches <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SaveTibetOrg\/status\/1529930379343241217?cxt=HHwWgoCp_d7ks7sqAAAA\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its obligations under international law<\/a>.
