{"id":12772,"date":"2022-05-17T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-16T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/nieuws\/g7-foreign-ministers-call-for-unfettered-access-to-tibet\/"},"modified":"2022-05-17T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T22:00:00","slug":"g7-foreign-ministers-call-for-unfettered-access-to-tibet","status":"publish","type":"nieuws","link":"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/en\/news\/g7-foreign-ministers-call-for-unfettered-access-to-tibet\/","title":{"rendered":"G7 Foreign Ministers call for unfettered access to Tibet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The International Campaign for Tibet welcomes the recognition of the ongoing human rights crisis in Tibet and the need for unfettered access to Tibet in the new communique from the Group of Seven\u2019s foreign ministers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following a three-day summit under German presidency, the G7 foreign ministers issued a communique on May 14, 2022 saying, \u201cWe remain deeply concerned by the human rights situation in China, particularly in Xinjiang and Tibet.\u201d They added, \u201cwe urge China to fully respect human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The foreign ministers also insisted that Chinese authorities \u201callow immediate, meaningful and unfettered access to Xinjiang and Tibet for independent observers, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and her potential visit to China.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bhuchung Tsering, Interim President of ICT, said: <em>\u201cTibet is one of the least accessible regions in the world for foreign visitors, including diplomats, journalists and independent observers. Its complete isolation is part of the Chinese government\u2019s strategy to oppress the Tibetan people by denying international scrutiny of the Communist Party\u2019s violations of basic human rights.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cIt is essential to Tibetans and to the global need for international accountability that leaders, and the G7 in particular, confront the on-the-ground reality in Tibet. Put simply, truth must be pursued rather than propaganda embraced.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The G7 is composed of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, and the High Representative of the European Union as an observer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UN High Commissioner visit<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The communique comes against the backdrop of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/postpone-trip-to-china-ngos-tell-un-high-commissioner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">imminent visit to the People\u2019s Republic of China<\/a>. With the trip already controversial for Bachelet\u2019s transparent lack of intention to demand access to the most oppressed and surveiled regions, the communique puts a magnifying glass on her pivotal choice to reject or embrace the CCP\u2019s propaganda machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tsering added, <em>\u201cWe hope that the High Commissioner will take this communique as encouragement to press for independent and unfettered access to Tibet.
