{"id":12716,"date":"2022-01-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-01-04T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/nieuws\/france-must-stand-up-for-tibetan-human-rights-during-eu-presidency\/"},"modified":"2022-01-05T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-01-04T23:00:00","slug":"france-must-stand-up-for-tibetan-human-rights-during-eu-presidency","status":"publish","type":"nieuws","link":"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/en\/news\/france-must-stand-up-for-tibetan-human-rights-during-eu-presidency\/","title":{"rendered":"France must stand up for Tibetan human rights during EU Presidency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the occasion of the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which started on 1 January, the International Campaign for Tibet has called on the French government to do its utmost to promote a strong and united position of the European Union to advance human rights on the Tibetan Plateau during the six months of its presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a briefing paper released last month, ICT provided an overview of the dire human rights situation in Tibet\u2014including the detention, torture and enforced disappearances of a large number of activists and dissidents, attacks against religious freedom and the Tibetan language, and restrictions on freedom of movement\u2014and presented five points of action through which the European Union could actively contribute to improving the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The briefing paper was shared with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 1 December 2021, just one month before the start of the presidency, ICT also held an episode of its Tibet Talks Europe series in which French parliamentarians and members of the European Parliament <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=x5rX1cn23Jo&amp;list=PLYWSjCVuPoR6LjM0Xfkt9plEz-cfa-jEB\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">discussed<\/a> the opportunities that the presidency could bring for human rights in China and Tibet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Five action points<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ICT calls on the French EU Presidency to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Publicly and vigorously demand the Chinese government respect the civil and political rights of Tibetans, who are subjected to a system of torture, arbitrary detention and restriction of freedom of expression, religion and assembly<\/li><li>Demand the respect of religious freedom for all Tibetan Buddhists, including those outside Tibet, and the right of Tibetan Buddhists to decide the succession of the Dalai Lama without interference from the Chinese government<\/li><li>Urge unfettered and reciprocal access to Tibet for UN experts as well as foreign diplomats, parliamentarians, journalists and non-governmental organizations<\/li><li>Urge sustainable development and climate-related policies on the Tibetan Plateau that respect the rights of Tibetans and do not lead to mass forced settlement of Tibetan nomads, poverty and cultural uprooting<\/li><li>Actively support the resumption of Tibetan-Chinese dialogue.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ICT\u2019s briefing paper (\u00abBriser le silence sur la crise du Tibet: Cinq points d\u2019action pour la Pr\u00e9sidence fran\u00e7aise \u00bb) is available in French <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tibet-5-points-daction-pour-la-Presidence-francaise-de-lUE.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ICT quote<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ICT EU Policy Director Vincent Metten:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cFrance has continuously expressed its support for human rights in Tibet, even offering to play a facilitating role in the resumption of the Sino-Tibetan dialogue.
