The International Campaign for Tibet welcomes the appointment of Uzra Zeya as the new special coordinator for Tibetan issues in the US State Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken announced today that Zeya, the undersecretary of state for civilian security, democracy and human rights, will serve as the special coordinator for Tibetan issues, effective immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zeya, who has decades of high-level experience in US foreign policy\u2014including on the issue of Tibet\u2014will now serve as the Biden administration\u2019s point person on efforts to help resolve the Tibetan issue, promote Tibetan identity, protect Tibetan culture and heritage and support the human rights of the Tibetan people, who have lived under China\u2019s oppressive rule for more than six decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zeya will be the first Indian American to serve in the role. India is home to the world\u2019s largest population of Tibetan exiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe International Campaign for Tibet welcomes Uzra Zeya\u2019s appointment as the new US special coordinator for Tibetan issues,\u201d<\/em> ICT Interim President Bhuchung K. Tsering said. \u201cWe anticipate that as someone familiar with the Tibetan issue, Zeya will work proactively at promoting dialogue between the Dalai Lama\u2019s envoys and the Chinese leadership, as well as at advocating for US interests in Tibet, and advancing the cause of Tibetan Americans and Tibetans around the globe.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs mandated by the Tibetan Policy and Support Act of last year, we urge Special Coordinator Zeya to proactively take the lead in gathering support from like-minded countries to formulate a common approach on the Tibetan issue. We look forward to working with Special Coordinator Uzra Zeya.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zeya\u2019s appointment follows bipartisan letters from Congress<\/a> sent to Zeya on Dec. 14 under the assumption that she would become the next special coordinator. The letters\u2014led by Sens. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Reps. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., and Chris Smith, R-NJ\u2014lay out several areas where Congress and the administration can work together to advance US policy on Tibet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Namgyal Choedup, representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration to North America, said: \u201cOn behalf of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration, I congratulate Under Secretary Uzra Zeya on her appointment as the Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues. We look forward to working closely with her, particularly on resolving the issue of Tibet through the Middle Way Approach. We would also like to thank both the US Congress and Administration for their unwavering support to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and for the just cause of Tibet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blinken said<\/a>: \u201cThis designation demonstrates the Administration\u2019s commitment to advance the human rights of Tibetans, help preserve their distinct heritage, address their humanitarian needs, and meet environmental and water resource challenges of the Tibetan plateau.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
