Sengdra was <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/tibetan-anti-corruption-campaigner-to-appeal-7-year-prison-sentence\/\">sentenced to seven years<\/a> in December 2019 for \u201cprovoking agitation\u201d and gathering people \u201cto disrupt public order.\u201d He had appealed the sentence and the hearing was scheduled on April 27, 2020 before the Golog (Chinese: Guoluo) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture Intermediate Court, Qinghai Province, but the hearing was postponed and there is no information on a new date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN human rights experts were concerned that Sengdra\u2019s \u201clegitimate work\u201d would be criminalized. They also expressed concern about reports of deterioration in his physical and mental health while in detention. Sengdra\u2019s rights and the rights of the Tibetan minority should be \u201cfully respected.\u201d China must comply with its international law obligation, which includes removing the charges against Sengdra, the experts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) welcomes the request of the UN human rights experts: \u201cAnya Sengdra\u2019s arrest and sentencing are part of the systematic suppression of social engagement, religious or cultural expression in Tibet that is not party-controlled or against abuses by the authorities. For example, the authorities in Tibet have been using a country-wide campaign against gang crime to tackle dissenters and activists like Anya Sengdra since 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anya Sengdra has been a staunch campaigner against government corruption since at least 2014, when he and other local Tibetan nomads founded a voluntary organization called \u201cMangdon Ling\u201d (\u201cPublic Affairs Forum\u201d) to fight against local authorities\u2019 abuse of power.
