In it, they urged him \u201cto take effective measures to ensure Tashi Wangchuk\u2019s freedom of speech as guaranteed by the Constitution of the People\u2019s Republic of China and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.\u201d The letter goes on to \u201cdemand Tashi Wangchuk\u2019s immediate release and the termination of proceedings as long as there is no legally valid evidence to substantiate the accusations against Tashi\u00a0Wangchuk.\u201d\n\nClaudia Roth is also serving as Vice-President of the German Parliament.\n\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7431 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/german-pms.jpg\" alt=\"german-pms\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" \/>Tashi Wangchuk had been detained since January 27, 2016, following the release of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/video\/world\/asia\/100000004031427\/a-tibetans-journey-for-justice.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0video report (\u201cA Tibetan\u2019s Journey for Justice\u201d)<\/a>\u00a0profiling his attempts to petition for the rights of Tibetans to speak and learn their own language.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.savetibet.org\/trial-of-tibetan-language-advocate-today-ends-without-known-verdict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A trial was held on January 4, 2018<\/a>\u00a0by the Yushu People\u2019s Intermediate Court during which the authorities alleged that Tashi Wangchuk had, through New York Times video documentary, \u201cintentionally attacked\u201d the Chinese government, and \u201cincited ethnic hatred\u201d, according to one of his lawyers, Liang Xiaojun. Tashi Wangchuk had ple\naded not guilty, according to the lawyer. Since March 2016 Tashi Wangchuk has been\nheld in custody without trial. Neither a formal indictment nor evidence has been presented to him or his relatives.\n\nFour independent Special Rapporteurs and the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention sent a communication in February 2017 in which they expressed serious concern about Tashi Wangchuk\u2019s continued detention, his limited right to counsel, the failure to present evidence, and irregularities in the criminal investigation.\n\nThe 32-year-old Tibetan has advocated for education and the preservation of Tibetan as a minority language. Tashi Wangchuk was detained on January 27, 2016 after The New York Times published a video about him and his work promoting the rights of minorities in the People\u2019s Republic of China. The documentary shows Tashi Wangchuk traveling to Beijing to charge local Chinese authorities with denying Tibetans the right to learn in their native language.\n\nAccording to our information, Tashi Wangchuk has been detained for \u201cinciting separatism.\u201d Chinese authorities have thus criminalized Tashi Wangchuk\u2019s peaceful civil activism despite the fact that he has unequivocally assured them that he is not seeking Tibet\u2019s separation from China.\n\nWe respectfully ask you to take effective measures to ensure Tashi Wangchuk\u2019s freedom of speech as guaranteed by the constitution of the People\u2019s Republic of China and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
