{"id":10764,"date":"2026-03-23T15:22:36","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T14:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/?post_type=nieuws&#038;p=10764"},"modified":"2026-04-08T13:07:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T11:07:42","slug":"freedom-house-report-shows-no-reprieve-in-intense-repression-in-tibet","status":"publish","type":"nieuws","link":"https:\/\/savetibet.nl\/en\/news\/freedom-house-report-shows-no-reprieve-in-intense-repression-in-tibet\/","title":{"rendered":"Freedom House report shows no reprieve in intense repression in Tibet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Tibet\u2019s global freedom score is zero for the third year in a row, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/report\/freedom-world\/2026\/growing-shadow-autocracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freedom in the World 2026<\/a> report released by the watchdog group <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freedom House<\/a> on 19 March, and Tibet remains \u201cnot free.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/country\/tibet\/freedom-world\/2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freedom House\u2019s 2026 profile of Tibet<\/a>, which is based on conditions and data from 2025, Tibet has a political rights score of \u20132 out of a possible 40 and a civil liberties score of 2 out of a possible 60, combining for an overall score of 0 out of 100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Tibet\u2019s score of 0 ties with South Sudan for second lowest on the list of 208 areas examined. The DPRK, with a score of 3 out of 100, ranks higher on Freedom House\u2019s index. Tibet scored a zero in the <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/country\/tibet\/freedom-world\/2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/country\/tibet\/freedom-world\/2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025<\/a> reports, breaking an 8-year trend of scoring 1 overall and underscoring the continued worsening human rights situation within Tibet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">China\u2019s Ethnic Unity Law<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Tibet\u2019s score reflects the codification of continuing repression by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in the \u201cEthnic Unity and Progress Law,\u201d which remained under consideration as of December 2025 and was <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.org\/new-prc-ethnic-unity-and-progress-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enacted on 12 March<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">The law officially targets ethnic and religious minorities for assimilation, aiming to erase minority languages by mandating that children learn in Chinese (usually through state-run boarding schools) and promoting President Xi Jinping\u2019s Sinicization goal throughout China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">China\u2019s state-run boarding schools, which the <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.org\/uscirf-decries-cultural-genocide-of-tibetan-buddhists-in-annual-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">US Commission on International Religious Freedom\u2019s 2025 annual report<\/a> characterized as \u201cforced assimilation\u201d and \u201ccultural genocide,\u201d have rapidly expanded in recent years, separating Tibetan schoolchildren from their families and stripping them of access to their Tibetan culture, language and identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">The PRC\u2019s Ethnic Unity law reverses long-standing CCP domestic and international commitments to recognizing the distinct culture and tradition of minority groups. The new Law directly undermines the Law on Regional Ethnic Autonomy, which enshrined the rights of Tibetans to manage their own internal affairs, and removes legal protections for translations of legal and government documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Dalai Lama succession<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">A key factor in Freedom House\u2019s negative score for political rights in Tibet under Chinese rule is the CCP\u2019s attempts to control Tibetan Buddhism and dictate its practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">The report analyses China\u2019s claim to exclusive authority over the Dalai Lama\u2019s succession. China\u2019s claim violates universal principles of religious freedom and has been met with opposition from the <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.org\/un-special-rapporteurs-communication-on-dalai-lama-succession-and-abducted-panchen-lama-welcomed-by-international-campaign-for-tibet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UN<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/savetibet.org\/new-bill-will-sanction-chinese-officials-for-interfering-in-dalai-lama-reincarnation-update-tibetan-policy-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United States<\/a> and the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Tibetans are currently required to denounce their religious beliefs to hold public sector jobs, Freedom House reports, and Tibetan Buddhist clergy are forced to pledge their loyalty to CCP ideology. The CCP further monitors the daily operations of temples and religious institutions, and a recent law bans minors from entering religious communities or buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">The Dalai Lama\u2019s 90th birthday in 2025 marked a significant point of resistance and resilience for the Tibetan people, even as those inside Tibet faced heightened repression by the CCP.
