The International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) invites friends of Tibet to join us in Brussels on 17 May 2026 for a protest marking 31 years since the disappearance of the 11th Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 17 May 1995, only days after being recognised as the Panchen Lama, six-year-old Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was taken into custody by the Chinese authorities together with his family. Since then, he has never been seen in public again, making him one of the world\u2019s longest-held disappeared political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more than three decades, the Chinese government has refused to provide credible, independent proof of his whereabouts or well-being. His disappearance remains a stark symbol of the repression of religious freedom and fundamental rights in Tibet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Brussels, ICT together with Tibetan associations in Belgium and Lungta Belgium<\/a>, will gather to call on the Chinese authorities to free the Panchen Lama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
